When I was growing up there was no such thing as a ‘play date’. If you wanted to play with someone, you went and knocked on their door and asked if they could come outside to play.
Sometimes you’d have friends over after school but generally playing was playing, and there was no ‘date’ as such. You and your friends got together and played tag or hide and seek, jump rope, rode bikes, or climbed trees. None of this required parental organization and management.
Nowadays it’s all different and especially here compared to where I’m from, Holland.
In addition to school, there is the excessive burden of homework (which, in France, is a lot), plus all the extracurricular activities that children are involved in.
So, sure, if children want to play now, it has to be squeezed into Wednesday afternoons and we are so happy all mums of these children featured today were willing to come along to the Odeon neighbourhood to play! Merci!
